On Saturday, March 10, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern, members of The American Legion Amateur Radio Club (TALARC) will operate Special Event stations using the club call sign K9TAL. Any ham radio operators who contact the stations are eligible to receive a QSL card and a commemorative certificate to document their participation.

Ham radio operators wishing to contact Special Event Station K9TAL should tune to 40m, 7.225 MHz (+/- 5 KHz) LSB; or to 20m, 14.275 MHz (+/- 5 KHz) USB; or to IRLP Reflector 9735; or to EchoLink *CROSSRDS* (9735) Conference node, accessible in Indianapolis on the K9DC 147.315 Repeater.

TALARC is getting an early start on the period of observance that will lead to the 100th anniversary of the founding of The American Legion in 2019. That period will commence with this year’s national convention at Minneapolis Aug. 24 to 30 and continue through celebration at the Indianapolis national convention in August of next year.

Some background information is in order and may be helpful for those TALARC clubs around the country that plan to operate their own Legion Birthday Special Event.

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Focusing on service to veterans, servicemembers and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States. Membership swiftly grew to over 1 million, and local posts sprang up across the country. Today, membership stands at about 2 million members serving in more than 13,000 posts worldwide.

Over the years, the Legion has influenced considerable social change in America, won hundreds of benefits for veterans and produced many important programs for children and youth.

Here is a brief, but certainly significant chronology of the Legion’s earliest history. It was in March 1919, that members of the American Expeditionary Forces convened in Paris for the first American Legion caucus. In May of the same year at the St. Louis Caucus, the term "The American Legion" was adopted as the organization's official name and the Legion's draft preamble and constitution were approved. Shortly thereafter the National Executive Committee of the Legion adopted the Legion emblem, and in September 1919 the Congress of the United States chartered The American Legion.

The first Legion convention convened in Minneapolis on Nov. 10, 1919. The Constitution and Preamble were formally adopted at that time and delegates voted 361-323 to locate the Legion's national headquarters in Indianapolis.

To those of you who are members of a local radio club or have amateur radio friends who are not members of the Legion’s radio club – let them know they are not just invited, but are heartily encouraged, to make contact with K9TAL. It’s a great way for others to learn about The American Legion and its amateur radio club.

K9TAL communications on 40-meters, IRLP, 2-meters and EchoLink will be coordinated by TALARC members operating from the Legion’s national headquarters in Indianapolis. The 20-meter communications will be coordinated by K9TAL/KI0CW at Dell Rapids, S.D., and by K9TAL/WA3DVO at Palmer Park, Md.

With band conditions being whatever they might be and signal strength varying, often by the hour, HF stations calling in to any of the three locations in Indiana, South Dakota or Maryland may need help with a relay. Anyone in a position to provide that help, please feel free to offer your assistance to the respective control stations.

To receive a QSL card and certificate after working K9TAL, send your name, address, call sign, and a 9x12-inch self-addressed stamped envelope to The American Legion Amateur Radio Club, c/o The American Legion, 700 N. Pennsylvania Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204.

All of us operating the control stations look forward to hearing your call to Kilo-Niner-Tango-Alfa-Lima on Saturday, March 10, for this year’s birthday commemoration.

73,
